Kishu is an old name for Wakayama prefecture where Mount Kōya is situated. Sugi is in cypress family endemic to Japan. It is also called Japanese cedar or Japanese redwood.

Kishu sugi incense uses essential oil extracted from sugi trees around 1200-year-old Shingon Buddhist temples in Mount Kōya.
