These small cups, called soba choko, are vessels made specifically for dipping sauce for cold buckwheat noodles (soba). They can also be used for holding tea, coffee or other drinks, dips, condiments, nuts, and more.
The line motif is called tokusa, a vertical narrow stripe pattern that derives from the shape of a thin, bamboo-like plant, and is frequently used to decorate Japanese pottery. The hand painted lines and splash patterns appear loose and rustic at the same time, and give these simple cups a distinct character.
