Maneki Neko (Good Luck Kitty)
This serious yet comical looking cat figurine is maneki neko (beckoning cat), a Japanese good luck charm believed to bring good luck to the owner.
Maneki neko figurines have been made throughout Japan for over centuries and each region has its characteristic designs. Our maneki neko are made in Kounosu, located 30miles northwest of Tokyo. Kounosu maneki neko are made of a mixture of kiri (paulownia) sawdust and gluten based glue. This unique material was developed during the Edo period (17th to mid 19th century) when Kounosu thrived as a manufacturing center for kiri chests of drawers. Toy making was conceived as a way to upcycle a large amount of sawdust produced as a byproduct of furniture industry.
Light and affordable, the maneki neko has been always loved by people as a talisman for good luck.
